I thought this article on LinkedIn was interesting. It makes the point that while many journalists can be entrepreneurial it is largely when they are on their own working as freelancers and writing about a certain topic.
Still, there are a number of journalism start-ups that have had success, such as Gawker, and I know some of my former colleagues are getting together and working out how they can pool their skill sets to build a new type of media services company.
Hanging desperately onto the old ways is not going to work anymore. The mix I feel, especially for freelancers, will be a little bit of the old combined with plenty of the new.
And for those worried about the future of journalism, “chin up”, as this Kookaburra I saw down at Sydney’s Balmoral, appears to be saying …
For someone like me, a soon-to-be high school leaver and aspiring journalist, my future is pretty terrifying! All we are hearing now is that journalism is a “dying industry” because of the move from traditional to digital media. Fingers crossed that we can all move with the times and still achieve our dream careers.
Hi Alexandra. Please don’t be terrified by your future! In my opinion journalism is not dying – there will always be a need for news and information that is well written. The point where it is delivered is certainly changing – that is newspapers are becoming far less relevant. And don’t forget one of the world’s richest men – Warren Buffett – is buying community newspapers – an area he says will continue to be prosper.
I read a few of your entries and you write really well. Good luck!
Thank you!
